Khomanani Day

Khomanani Day is, 9 October - honouring Goverment's Partnership Against AIDS.

On 9 October, 2005 SABC 2 will be showcasing real stories of ordinary citizens, community organisations, national leaders and celebrities making a difference. This national television special will feature celebrities, industry leaders, comedians, activists and many more – making their pledge.

Khomanani Day is a national social mobilisation campaign focusing on the impact of HIV and AIDS –promoting Community, Action, Partnership and Awareness.

We are asking the public to ‘pledge’ to take action in the face of HIV and AIDS: to Care; to Talk; to Test; to Condomise; - to help themselves, their families and their communities

September: Call-to-Action - Awareness – How, What, Where October: Pledge
November: Fulfilment and report-back
December: Collective World AIDS Day Celebration

The smallest action will make a big difference to someone’s life – what can you do?

Here is what some South Africans are pledging:

Connie and Shona Ferguson (Generations actress and Muvhango actor)
‘We pledge to always protect each other by having our HIV test done together as a couple.’

Krijay Govender (Actress/ Director/ comedienne)
‘For Khomanani Day, I pledge to speak to Girl Children about issues around HIV, AIDS and sexuality.’

Thornton Oaks (Tarot card reader)
‘I pledge to protect myself by undergoing regular HIV Test.’

Portia Modise (Banyana-Banyana Captain)
‘I pledge to talk to my sisters Lucia and Lorraine so that they should use condoms to protect themselves from AIDS.’

Marc Lottering (Comedian)
‘I pledge to encourage all Cape Townians to protect themselves and to survive, I will do this by handing condoms.’

SLIKOUR (Sqwatta Kamp)
‘I pledge to use a condom and to protect myself.’

16:30 - 18:00 Khomanani special on SABC 2
18:30 - 19:00 Fokus (SABC 2) will focus on Khomanani Day and broadcast from the KD studio
20:00 - 22:00 Khomanani Main Event – live pledge-a-thon television special on SABC 2
