National Youth Summit against Racism, Racial
Discrimination, Xenophobia
and Related Intolerance
2 - 3 August 2001
A national Youth Summit against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related
Intolerance will be held at the Kopanong Hotel and
Conference Centre at 243 Glen Gory
Road, Benoni, on Thursday and Friday,
2 - 3 August 2001. The South African Youth Council (SAYC) spokesperson, Benjamin
Mokgothu, indicated that more than 80 youth delegates have been invited to the meeting.
Minister in the Presidency, Dr Essop Pahad, will deliver the keynote address at the
opening ceremony on 2 August and the Chairperson of the South African Human Rights
Commission, Dr Barney Pityana, will provide an update on global mobilization towards the
World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance
(WCAR) on 3 July 2001.
The following are the objectives of the Summit: -
To provide youth formations a platform to make a meaningful input to the United Nations
WCAR and NGO forum (pre- and post conference) taking place on 31 August - 7 September
2001.
- To reach consensus on a national declaration and draft SA Youth ten years programme of
action.
- To share information about the international Youth Summit scheduled to take place in
Durban on 26-27 August 2001.
- Afford youth leaders an opportunity to engage and discuss the implications of New
African Initiative and the establishment of the African Union.
Prior to this Summit, provincial youth workshops were held throughout the country after
which the following thematic topics were isolated to form the basis for deliberations at
this gathering:
- Racism and poverty/economy
- Racism and education
- Racism, gender and ethnicity
- Racism and the criminal justice system
- Racism and the media
- Racism and health
- Racism and environment
Expected to dominate the content of the resolutions of the Summit is the question of
reparations for the victims of racism and slavery and compensation for colonialism.
The Summit is part of mass youth mobilization towards the International Youth Summit
taking place in Durban whose primary purpose is: to create a global network of youth
organizations and leaders committed to combating racism, to influence the political
decision-making process and to serve as a catalyst for series of action-oriented
initiatives at the international, regional and the national level that fully involve youth
in anti-racism activities.
